What do you feed your dog?
I used to use a combination of the dry stuff (like IAMS or Eukanuba or something very similar) plus canned food (such as Pedigree). I became skeptical about the canned stuff and what's in it after reading up on the subject, and switched to more "people food," such as boiled chicken, boiled rice, flame-broiled hamburger, et cetera, and mixed that up with the dry stuff.
Just wondered what you might be feeding your dog, and why. |

Top seven ingredients are : Chicken meal Turkey meal Brown rice White rice Lamb meal Chicken fat Herring meal Of course, our two seniors get added to this : White rice hotdogs (2) butter (for their coats) and if they are really lucky - some chicken if we have any left over from a meal What can I say? They are spoiled. |

Re: What do you feed your dog?
Gasilat,
I'm sitting here looking at you dog's twin. He also gets pretty much whatever he wants. The "official" food is Purina Large Breed. He loves it. He also lives off of anything the 2 and 4-year old will give him, which tends to be a lot. We tried supplementing his diet with a Jehovah's Witness that would not leave us alone, but he won't eat them any more. That last one gave him gas. |

I don't know of a single person at the vet hospital i work at that has a mission of "keeping a pet sick" most of our time is spent trying to educate clients on how to keep their pets HEALTHY. Generally the people that think their pet is a human are the ones that have chronically ill animals. |

Why dogs are better than women... Dogs don't cry Dogs love it when your friends come over Dogs don't care if you use their shampoo Dogs think you sing great A dog's time in the bathroom is confined to a quick drink Dogs don't expect you to call when you're running late. The later you are, the more excited dogs are to see you Dogs will forgive you for playing with other dogs Dogs don't notice if you call them another dog's name Dogs are excited by rough play Dogs don't mind if you give their offspring away Dogs can appreciate excessive body hair Anyone can get a good looking dog If a dog is gorgeous, other dogs don't hate it Dogs don't shop Dogs like it when you leave lots of things on the floor Dogs never need to examine the relationship A dog's parents never visit Dogs love long car trips Dogs understand that instincts are better than asking for directions When a dog gets old and snaps at you incessantly, you can shoot it Dogs like beer Dogs don't hate their bodies Dogs never criticize Dogs agree that you have to raise your voice to get your point across Dogs never expect gifts Dogs don't worry about germs Dogs don't want to know about every other dog you've had Dogs don't let magazine articles guide their lives You never have to wait for a dog, they're ready to go 24 hours a day Dogs have no use for flowers, cards or jewelry Dogs don't borrow your shirts Dogs never want foot rubs Dogs enjoy heavy petting in public Dogs find you amusing when you're drunk Dogs can't talk Dogs seldom outlive you |
Re: What do you feed your dog?
Dogs can't cook. We feed our 5 year old Boston Terrier mix on a 100% raw diet. Raw meat, raw bones, raw veggies. The bulk of his diet is this:
http://www.farmoredogfood.com/ We also occasionally give him raw whole eggs, raw chicken wings and raw beef ribs with meat ($1.25/lb). His favorite treat are baby carrots. He is the healthiest dog I have ever had. |
Re: What do you feed your dog?
I feed Canidae. Good food, good price ($35 for 30lb). No corn. Dogs apparently don't digest corn at all, it's just wasted filler... like you or I eating cardboard.
I supplement with raw eggs, a chicken leg every now and then (before it goes on the grill) and RMB (raw meaty bones) from the butcher. Some people go so far as to bake and powder the egg shells to mix with kibble. My dogs won't eat the shells raw so it leaves a mess if I give them whole. I never knew that giving ANY cooked bone was risky for the dog. I always thought it was just poultry bones but apparently EVERY bone splinters after being cooked. A couple of pictures of dogs with bone shard jammed behind a tooth was enough for me to only risk that very rarely. They do still love beef and pork rib bones. The pork bones don't seem to be nearly as splintery after cooking but one of the dogs gets some fierce gas afterwards. For those that are concerned with feeding raw because of diseases such as salmonella should know that a dog's digestive tract is too short for these types of diseases to take hold. They can eat carrion, after all. The scat can still contain the bacteria though, so scoop that poop! On a related note, has anyone here ever given a "psycho" dog St. John's Wort? They sell it specifically for pets as a tincture in a pump like hand soap. You just put a squirt on the food and they'll get it. It's a mood enhancer for humans and supposedly has the same effect in dogs. I'm about ready to try it for our one rescue that has some aggression and socialization issues. At $8 a bottle, why not? |

Where do you think we keep our silver? Problem is we have to 'recycle' it after each BM to keep his value up.

Re: What do you feed your dog?
He gets a little of all that he wants from what I eat. At a hundred pounds he would have to consume about two pounds of very dark rich chocolate to be any serious trouble, so he gets a little bit of that also[with a lot of little designer dogs out there under ten pounds that could be done in by a big candy bar, I understand why that warning is necessary]. His main commercial staple is dog bones. For the SHTF situations I always like to keep a few dozen quarts of canned chicken legs on hand. I buy 40 pound boxes on sale at the meat mart[19-29 cents a pound] and can them myself in quart jars. If I find a road kill deer in good shape that produces an even better liked product when canned. If you use "Ball" brand lids you can get several uses out of each lid. Just make sure you cook it for at least 90 minutes at 10psi and carefully clean the lids after use so that there is a good seal and a good vacum formed in the jar. Throw away any food from jars with a popped lid or that don't go "whoosh" when you pry the lid up.

All raw meats, chicken, fish, eggs, veggies, avocados, old fashioned oatmeal
We were able to bring back the health of a sick dog with this approach |

You have never met my dogs!! Any dog food without corn in it is normally ok. Beet is bad also in food or treats. Chicken necks are great dog food!! |
Re: What do you feed your dog?
Sensible choice dry and canned (base), table scraps (loves almost everything), bones and organs from our grass fed whole beef.
Treats of dubious nutritionally hot dogs which are much loved. In a crisis she could make it fine sharing what we eat. She could use about 200 acres to run, and has a blast when we visit rural friends with big acreage. But she is loyal, smart, and good protection. Clearly grateful for the home (adult big dog pound refugee, 6 months in the slammer). She considers the wife her alpha which is a bit distressing to my ego. (Aren't dogs good at that kind of structural thinking? Does that mean I'm not da boss and don't know it?) :wavey: Minds me fine too, though. Being extra protective of her is also fine. Very team spirited checking the yard with me. Clearly she finds it fun as well as duty. She especially likes showing me things to check and tell her if it is ok. Dad taught me how not to have a yappy dog and his ways work. He grew up with working animals and really understood the teamwork. In his opinion dogs without work were unhappy. He did not speak of it in the modern pack structure way. But he said dogs enjoy working with their humans, be it hunting, guarding, herding or finding. I find that to be true. She has a lot of good instincts. Dad was very sad that AKC type breeding for looks was ruining working dogs it took a lot of work to breed up. |
